林心恬老師的研究專長為生命週期評估、循環經濟、綠色設計、塑膠包裝及廢棄物減量、碳排放分析及減量、環境教育。林心恬老師所主持的資源與能源效率研究室主要利用生命週期評估研究方法,對產品、服務、及企業之環境影響做正確的科學性判斷,並透過循環經濟及綠色設計概念將產品進行改善,以達成碳排及廢棄物減量、資源及能源的有效利用。
林心恬老師研究團隊積極與企業及環保團體等組織合作,將研究與社會需求結合,合作對象包含Gogoro、foodpanda、啟碁科技、綠色和平組織、RE-THINK重新思考等知名企業及團體,致力透過學術研究提供社會永續轉型知識及途徑,促進企業永續發展。另外也積極進行環境永續教育推廣,致力培育下一代永續領導人才。

My Story
自工學院畢業後,我成為了一個機構工程師,在組裝自己設計的產品時,發現組裝時產生的塑膠包裝垃圾竟然比產品還多,這件事讓我對於未來的發展產生了迷惘。於是便辭去工作,到馬祖的東莒島過了一小段簡樸的小鎮生活。當時,偶然遇到因氣候不佳而必須封島的情況,在頓失補給來源下,所有食物都得靠島內自給自足。第一次經歷自己揉麵包、自己釣魚、自己採集蔬菜的生活,對於早已習慣都市便利生活的我而言,無疑是極為強烈的文化衝擊,於是我便開始思考生活另一種可能的型態。
因為在馬祖那段美好的小島經驗,讓我在留學日本期間,愛上了瀨戶內海,每次的假期都在讓自己在不同的島嶼間走跳。一次旅行中,我發現了瀨戶內海一座美麗的小島—豊島,竟有驚人的廢棄物違法棄置歷史,自此讓我開始埋首於研究小島廢棄物問題。最後便以小島廢棄物處理為題,完成博士論文並取得學位,在順利取得成大教職後,回台任教至今。
從大學起,我就熱愛旅行,不但嚮往自由生活,更樂於接觸不同的價值觀。現在也致力於在教導學生的過程中,鼓勵學生在自由的環境裡,發現自己前所未有的可能性,並致力於推廣減廢、永續的生活方式。
